Zhang Jiayi

A lifelong sociology student, and constantly looking to understand our society better.

I spent eleven years running research end to end: qualitative moderation in English and Mandarin, quantitative design and analysis, fieldwork, reporting up to C-suite, across finance, public policy, and social research. My sociology training propels me to dissect the whys behind people's attitudes and beliefs, with curiosity guiding my research process.

Projects

Studies I've run.

01

Dialect & Heritage Language Study

n = 1,000 · Jul 2026

A quantitative study of dialect and heritage language use in Singapore. 1,000 respondents answered ten questions, structured to read as one continuous narrative rather than a stack of cross-tabs.

02

Land Redevelopment Study: A Comparison Between Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks

n = 900 · Aug 2026

A paired study of public awareness, sentiment and consultation attitudes toward two Singapore green and heritage sites facing redevelopment: Gillman Barracks and Maju Forest. 900 respondents, weighted to the resident population, tracked across 13 chapters from first awareness through to what meaningful public consultation should look like.

03

Parenthood Study

n = 8 IDIs · Aug–Sep 2026

A qualitative study that flips the usual question. Not why Singaporeans aren't having kids, that side is well covered, but why parents who did would, or wouldn't, do it again: the joys, the support that helped, the fears, and what government and employers have overlooked.

04

Race Relations Study

n = 1,000 · Sep 2026

A quantitative study on race relations in Singapore, commissioned in the wake of the SIA/Air India investment controversy and the racist comments it drew online. 1,000 respondents, weighted to the resident population, delivered as an interactive dashboard tracking awareness and reaction to that episode alongside the harder, longer-running questions about race, immigration and protectionism sitting underneath it.

05

Ministerial Salary Study

n = 1,000 · Sep 2026

A quantitative study on the September 2026 review of ministers' salaries and MPs' allowances, fielded in the days after the announcement. 1,000 respondents, weighted to the resident population, tracking awareness of the review, reaction to the arguments raised in the public debate, and views on how the Government should proceed, for the ministerial increase and the MP allowance increase side by side.

06

Chemical Castration Study

n = 1,000 · Sep 2026

A quantitative study on public opinion toward chemical castration for convicted sex offenders, commissioned after the Government's public statement on possibly using it. 1,000 respondents, weighted on age, gender and ethnicity, delivered as an interactive dashboard tracking awareness, understanding, support, trust in the Government, and where the public draws the line on who it should apply to.

07

COE & Cost-of-Living Tracker

n = 1,000 per wave · 6 waves · Apr–Sep 2026

A six-wave quantitative tracker on the Certificate of Entitlement system and its place in the wider cost-of-living conversation, run monthly from April to September 2026. 1,000 respondents per wave, weighted on age, gender and ethnicity, delivered as an interactive dashboard following nine attitudes across time and across eight demographic and political cuts.

Currently in the field A study on freedom of assembly. Findings to follow.

    Sociology at Work: Applying Sociology in Market Research

    SUSS Sociology Programme, Workshop #8

    Built around a framework I call the 4 Cs: curiosity, contextual thinking, critical thinking, and compassion, with case examples drawn from live commercial studies.

  • 17 Sep 2024

    New Research Methodologies and Tools in Commercial Research

    Institute of Policy Studies

    Spoke to a group of academics within IPS Social Labs about existing tools outside the traditional ones for both qualitative and quantitative research, introducing methodologies like shop-alongs, online forums, and eye tracking as examples of what's used in commercial research.

Freelance research support

How I can help.

You have a survey to field, an interview series to moderate, or a stack of data that needs to become a deck someone can act on. I take that on directly, unblocking teams who need research seniority without the full-time hire.

01

Quantitative research

Questionnaire design, survey scripting, fieldwork management, data cleaning and analysis. I've advised on survey design and project scoping across hundreds of studies for finance, consumer, and government clients.

02

Qualitative research

Discussion guide design and moderation for focus groups and in-depth interviews, in English or Mandarin, through to thematic synthesis.

03

AI-enhanced insight deliverables and workflows

I build insights dashboards powered by AI that dispense with lengthy Word or PowerPoint reports without compromising on impact, that your team can use or even pass off as the final deliverable to your end client. I'm also happy to partner with your team to build specialised AI workflows that generate time savings beyond the engagement itself.

04

Client engagement through workshops & presentations

Apart from formal presentations, I run workshops to consolidate decision points at any stage of the research cycle, from surfacing hypotheses and opportunity statements, to activating insights into decisions, to co-creating a follow-up research roadmap.
